OCMC Announces Fall Lecture Tour Series of V. Rev. Ignatios Sennis of Calcutta, India
Oct 4, 2000
St. Augustine, FL (OCMC) It is with great joy and anticipation that the Orthodox Christian Mission Center announces the Lecture Tour of Fr. Ignatios Sennis of Calcutta, India. Fr. Sennis, who begins his tour in the United States on October 7, will offer presentations throughout the country on the life and activities of the Orthodox Church in India. The Mission Center is excited to have Fr. Ignatios come to the States, as this is a wonderful opportunity for Orthodox Christians in America to hear first-hand of the missionary endeavors of our brothers and sisters in India.
Fr. Sennis, who is originally a priest-monk from the Stavronikita Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece, began his missionary efforts over ten years ago. After a brief stay in Korea, where he was assisting Bishop SOTERIOS of Zelon with the missionary activities there, he found himself headed to Calcutta, India. He had gone to Calcutta to continue the missionary efforts of Fr. Athansasios Anthidis, who had died while trying to establish the Churchs mission programs in India.
Immediately upon arriving in India, Fr. Ignatios established The Philanthropic Society of the Orthodox Church, an arm of the Church that has responded to the extreme needs of a society in such despair. Although he is a man of few words, his actions speak loudly. Fr. Ignatios work is truly the action of Christ-like love, which know no boundaries.
Since his arrival some eight years ago, his accomplishments prove to be nothing short of a miracle. In this short time he has built two orphanages, one that houses 50 young boys in the village of Kakdeep and another that houses 200 young girls in a village just outside Calcutta. This complex also includes a school, medical clinic and job training facilities, in order to secure a more promising future for the young girls. He has also built a half dozen medical clinics, offering patients medical attention free of charge, and constructed three schools, which are meeting the long-range educational needs of the youth in remote villages.
His other philanthropic efforts include a daily breakfast of warm milk and biscuits for over 300 street children, and on every Monday he offers a two-week supply of food staples (flour, oil, sugar, soy beans, lentils, soap, toilet paper and matches) to approximately 500 of the poorest families in Calcutta.
Most importantly, through all his efforts Fr. Ignatios has brought in more than 5000 people to the Orthodox Church. Since going to India, he has built six churches in villages outside the city, as well as prepared and educated over eight men for ordination to the priesthood. After their ordination to the priesthood by the Bishop, many of these indigenous clergymen will return to their villages to begin and assist in the missionary efforts there.
Please check the attached tour schedule to see if Fr. Sennis is coming to your town. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear the inspirational and inspiring work of this incredible Orthodox missionary. For more details, please contact the Orthodox Christian Mission Center at (904) 8295132.
