    Evacuation Ordered for Monastery and Saint Nicholas Ranch - Fire in Central California Continues to Spread
    The Rough Fire in central California has now grown to nearly 120,000 acres and is only at 30% containment. Over 2,200 firefighters are battling this enormous fire which was caused by a lightning strike on July 31, 2015. The air quality continues to deteriorate with light ash falling throughout the region. Saint Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center and the Monastery of the Theotokos the Life Giving Spring, located in Dunlap, CA, are in the immediate area of the fire and as of Friday, September 11, 2015 they have been ordered to evacuate the premises as the fire is headed in the direction of these properties.

    The Feast of the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross is a blessed day and celebration of the tremendous power of the Cross of our Lord. Through the Cross the power and wisdom of God have been revealed. By the Cross we are reconciled to Him, and we can find true and enduring peace. It is the Cross that directs us to Christ and to the way of salvation and eternal life.
    Patriarchal Message for the New Ecclesiastical Year and the Day for the Protection of the Natural Environment
    As everyone knows, September 1st of each year has been dedicated at the initiative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate – and recently also by the Roman Catholic Church – as a day of prayer for the protection of the natural environment. On this day, we especially beseech the supreme God to gladden His creation so that human life therein may be joyful and fruitful. This prayer includes of course the petition that the inevitable natural climate changes may occur and be permitted within tolerable levels both for human survival and for the planet’s sustainability.

The relationship of our commemoration and observance is significant due to the changing of the seasons, our agrarian heritage in relation to marking time, and the strong foundations of our worship and theology in the relationship of our Creator to His creation.

    We commemorate today, on this blessed Feast of the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary, the holy repose of the Mother of our Lord and seek her intercessions for deliverance, refuge, and salvation in Christ. From her resting place among the Saints she continues to radiate the grace of God offering solace and strength to those in need. Through her repose and her constant ministry on our behalf, the Theotokos shows the power of faith and the promise of life beyond death.
