EDUCATION
And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
- Deuteronomy 6:6-7
We spend much time educating ourselves about things of this world (news, economics, sports, leisure, etc.). Yet how much time do we spend educating ourselves about the world to come? Things that seem critical to know in this world will rarely hold significance in the when we pass from this life. That is not to say that a secular education should be abandoned, but rather that we need to spend appropriate time daily studying Scriptures, and thereby learning about God’s plan for our lives.
Ways to build on education
-
Read books about the Orthodox Church, the Church Fathers who wrote and spoke on how to live by the Scriptures, and most importantly, the Bible. The Bible gives us God’s divine plan for us. The more we read, the more we learn of His love, His life, and how He wants us to live.
-
Attend spiritual lectures and retreats. Check with your parish priest to learn when such events are scheduled in your area. If there are none, consider listening to some online at www.goarch.org or organizing one at your parish.
-
Ask questions—whether we are age 4 or 94, this is how we learn. There will always be questions that arise as we can’t even begin to comprehend the magnitude of God. So, go ahead—ask, search, find—then continue asking, searching and finding your whole life.
