MAY 1, 2012 -- With the blessing and in the presence of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America the Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir will perform on June 16, 2012 at 7PM at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in NYC located at 319 East 74th Street. The Archdiocesan School of Byzantine Music will host this year’s concert.

In May 2011, the Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir performed its first formal concert in the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. Shortly thereafter, the entire concert was posted on You Tube were it has received over 25,000 views. Indicative of the interest Byzantine Music has received, especially in the Tri-State area, the choir has worked to expands its performance activity and public exposure.

On September 8, 2011 the choir performed as part of an interfaith memorial service offered in St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in New York on the occasion of the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.

In December 2011, the Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir performed for the first time at Carnegie Hall – Weill Recital Hall in New York City. In front of a sold out crowd of very distinguished guests including His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America, primates from Orthodox jurisdictions and diplomats from Orthodox nations, the choir performed a number of Byzantine Hymns dating back centuries. The night was highlighted with a performance of the gospel reading taken from the Vespers of Agape in Homeric Greek.

In January of 2012, the choir performed at the Onassis Center USA in mid-town New York on the occasion of the Greek Letters Celebration organized by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

On March 24, 2012 the choir performed twice at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of a broader exhibition on Byzantium and Islam. In the same month, one week earlier, the choir performed in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church as part of the 100 year anniversary celebration from the establishment of the Panchiaki “Korais” Society of New York. The concert featured Byzantine Hymns and Greek Folk Songs.

This June the choir returns to the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity to close its season with Byzantine Hymns and Greek Folk Songs. This year’s concert will also feature separate performances by students enlisted in the Archdiocesan School of Byzantine Music. It is destine to be a memorable evening!

CarnegieHallFlyer.pngNew York - The Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America performed a selection of Byzantine music during their concert on December 14, 2011 at Carnegie Hall.

This concert featured a repertoire of diverse Byzantine music drawn from the rich liturgical tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The Archdiocesan Youth Choir ushered in the Christmas season with a variety of Christmas Carols which are sung throughout different regions of Greece.

The concert concluded with a Great Doxology in honor of St. Nicholas and the Church at Ground Zero—the only house of worship destroyed on 9/11—in thanksgiving for the recent announcement about its rebuilding.
